Introducing Artista

Jaime Cervantes ·

Today, we’re introducing Artista, a design agent for creating fully editable SVGs and a platform to share, discover, and remix designs.

The case for a design agent

If you’ve tried to use AI in your design process, you’ve probably noticed a few patterns:

It’s prompt roulette. One prompt gets you close. The next one fixes what you asked for, but changes two or three things you didn’t expect. Several prompts later, you’re further away than when you started, and you can’t undo your changes.

It’s pixels or vectors, but never both. The output is a flat image or a vector file. Real production-ready design mixes both in a format that you can actually edit.

It’s templates all the way down. To be fast and cheap, most AI tools start from a template and fill in the blanks, and deep down, you can feel it. Everything is starting to look like everything else.

It’s closed. Design tools have become endless subscriptions to someone else’s ecosystem, with proprietary formats and walled gardens.

AI design tools are coding tools in disguise. For most creatives, though, code isn’t the medium.

We think design deserves better.

The Artista approach

We wanted a fundamentally different kind of design tool, so we built an agent from the ground up. Here’s what that looks like:

Vectors and pixels in one file

Artista can combine vector graphics and pixel-based images in the same SVG file. You get the flexibility of both formats in a single design, without flattening everything into one image.

Editable semantic layers

Every design is organized into semantic, editable layers. Open a design in the built-in editor, and your edits stay part of the session.

Research and exploration over templates

We don’t believe in templates. Every design session begins with research and exploration, uncovering ideas that inform distinct creative directions.

Creative work is rarely linear. Ideas evolve. Serendipity matters. Artista is designed to explore, backtrack, reconsider, and follow promising ideas wherever they lead.

You’re in control

Shape every part of the process. Define the canvas size, control how many directions to explore, set the effort level, and bring in your own fonts, images, and external SVGs.

Infinite variations

We built an SVG engine from scratch and extended SVG with expressive syntax for generative variations and combinations. A single design can unfold into countless possibilities.

Share, discover, remix

Share a design and it can become a starting point for someone else. Discover what others are creating, remix their work, and take it somewhere new.

Artista is a creative community where users and agents build on each other’s ideas, evolve designs, and explore together.

Credits (or use your own API keys) over subscriptions.

The last thing the world needs is yet another subscription. Artista runs on credits instead: buy what you need and use them at your own pace.

No credits, no problem. Connect your own API keys from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, or OpenRouter, choose the models you want, and Artista won’t charge you a thing. You only pay your provider for what you use. Requests go straight from your browser to the provider, so your keys are never sent to or stored on Artista’s servers.

Why SVG?

SVG gives us something unusually useful: graphics expressed as code, in an open format that every browser and most design tools understand.

SVG has also become a language for frontier models to express graphics, and an important benchmark. These models keep getting better at generating and understanding SVG, and as they improve, Artista improves with them.

And because it’s open, what you make is portable, editable, and entirely yours. We’re not building a walled garden.

Artista isn’t built to replace designers

We’re building Artista around a simple idea: AI should be a collaborator, not the creative voice.

Artista isn’t about taking over the creative process. It’s about giving designers better tools to explore ideas and spend more time on the parts of the process that require judgment, taste, and intent.

We also want to push the medium forward together with the creative community.

The road ahead

Today, most design is explicit and top-down, with every aspect, every detail, and every outcome planned up front.

We believe we’re entering an era of more emergent design, where systems evolve, adapt, and grow over time. In this future, design becomes less about specifying every detail and more about shaping a space of possibilities.

This shift opens the door to things that have been difficult or impractical until now: generative systems too complex to create by hand, forms that can evolve and adapt rather than remain static, and mass customization at an entirely new scale.

AI can help push emergent design forward, and Artista is our first step in that direction.

Artista is also a space to explore the structure of creativity and what it means for agent architecture. How do we build agents that truly explore? How do we create systems that make room for serendipity and surprise? How do we keep models from collapsing into the same familiar patterns?

We’ll be publishing deeper explorations of agent architecture, emergent design, and the structure of creativity in future posts. In the meantime, we’d love to see what you create!
